Invasion From Skies:foreign television channels are destroying our culture

The question "whether foreign television channels are destroying our culture or not" at first seem like the one "egg came first or hen".

As soon as we think about foreign channels ,obnoxious stuffs and obscene scenes creeps into our mind, but at the same time we cant stop ourselves from praising their technological excellence and updating our knowledge from their informative programs.
Its like "fashion channels" vs "discovery".The good is coming with the bad. There is no harm if we watch them for entertainment and wash all as soon as we switch off the T.V,but its a proven fact that bad thing pleases us the most and remain in our mind for long.We cant avoid ourselves from adopting the trends and culture and unconsciously break our link with spiritual legacy handed down by great sages and seers.

Lascivious portrayal of sex and nudity, openness in relationships sooner or later will end up into grave of our "wide" and "diverse" culture for which we Indians are known across the world.

Brain drain and terrorism and the like ,always remain a matter of concern for us but the cultural invasion from skies through the satellites will ruin the mental development of younger generation and is a matter of much more concern.

Even if we say that we are ourselves responsible for what we adopt from these channels ,the teenage mind is too young to differentiate between the right and the wrong, and adopt the bad at the cost of their goodness.

The question now arises is that when India did not lose its identity despite being under foreign rule for so many years ,how could some blady satellite destroy our "non fragile " culture. But let me tel this that the scenario is not the same as it was at the time of foreign rule. Now we are free to do and adopt what we want.Children are not brought up under the supervision of his "housewife" mom. They are much more exposed to the outer world and free to live life their own way.In a survey conducted,it was found that channels showing adult stuffs are more widely watched in comparison to informative channels.

Since each and everyone is here to make money, our Indian channels are adopting the same trend.Serials full of adult content and vulgar stuffs are telecasted all the time and this leaves a lasting impression on the blooming(thanks to kyle for suggesting the adjective:)) buds.
Thus the intensity and warmth in the relationship is degrading and we are moving away from our values and social esteemed culture.

The need for hour is to ban the channels which expose us to overdose of western culture. The adult stuffs should be posted at late hours and watching of only good channels should be encouraged by setting their prices accordingly.
A correct step from government and entertainment industry at this time could result into a better future with our culture preserved.

Please suggest some ideas to fight against this "invasion from skies".

  1. Rules should be made for telecasting of visual media whether it is Indian channel or foreign channel.

Stop telecasting comedy stuffs at the name of Indian culture (@ rakhi ka swayamvar)

FREEDOM OF SPEECH for better India

  2. Television is a media to create some awareness among people and then to entertain people, but not to destroy our culture.
Young generations prefer western culture because it gives more freedom and openness in relationships. But at the same time overdose of it ruins "family" feeling of our Indian culture.
Foreign channels are necessary for enjoyment and to know about the culture and trend of other countries and state but irrespective of this they should need to keep in mind that their serials doesn't harm the culture and tradition of India.
Their should be certain tougher law/rules which restrict the sexual and illegal content of the visual media which destroy the Indian culture. These rules should be common for both Indian and foreign Media Channels.

  3. If it's the foreign channels destroyin indian culture ,define Indian culture 1st....is it the DD1 that shows indian culture...

ask any1 he'll prob go blind n deaf rather than seeing channels that show the so called Indian culture...

nw it's time we stop feigning hypocritical ideas n think towards the advancement of entertainment industry in a betr way...afterall who doesnt like prison brk bt ull find many who hate "Talaak kyun" so i dont think that foreign channels shd be banned...rather there shd be something like a timing system...as in 11PM to late night for adult content or stuff having voilence and gore..bt then "in india our govt decides what we shd see and what we shouldn't...pity" :|
"rejection isn't always the best solution"

  4. definition of indian culture is not confined to doordarshan....its much beyond that. Its quiet dynamic and the best example to prove my words is the recent cultural change...."gay marriage legalized",so its quiet unaware and casual on the part of today's youth to misunderstood the vast n fragile culture as those confined to history books.

Moreover its not that if we ban the adult content serials we are only left with "talaak kyun"(if that serial exists),there is a vast variety of serials from "medical detectives" to 'wassup youngistan" to....long list. Our entertainment industry provide us with vast variety of serials to suit interest of all.

Serials glorifyng nudity and sex should be banned in order to preserve our social values because teenagers are too innocent to understand, what to adopt and what not to adopt.
And for that point that "its very shameful for the modern youth if we dance at the tunes of govt and watch these serials only at late hours", then my friend let me tell, you don't even have the slightest idea of the effect which these serials have on the younger generation.....i hope u dont expect your daughter to act and behave in the same manner as you use to watch in your favs programs.Girls in these serials are much more open in relationship and so are the guys.

just for our entertainment at non odd hours we cant let our moral values wash off and we cant let the next generation to distract and deviate. They have the right to enjoy every stage of their life.Dont snatch away thr innocence.

And sometimes what we perceive as rejection may be the filtration. If one want to avoid dirty water we don't reject water,we just filter it.

  5. well pretty nice and bold thoughts. As i dont want to add on to any controversy surrounding first i must appreciate your concern.

But maybe banning is not the simple way out.First of all its not the only way our mind will wander out of our culture.
I am not sure if it happens just with me or not but i am not a big fan of secluding someone from something makes him/her dislike or disappreciate that thing but rather it just increases the curiosity.

If its about sex polluting young minds then maybe banning shows on TV is not the sureshot answer because like it or not the web has got more sex clips on it than age of our politicians(maybe this could be another blog) and net is always readily available.I am not in support of shows telecasting them(i hope our censor board takes enough care of this stuff too).I may sound uninspiring and pessimist but i think that giving children knowledge about it might help because sooner or later our hormones do catch up(i am atleast sure about the guys)......and well i dont want to miss out on a friends show coz rachel kissed ross in an episode.

if it is about children loosing their cultural values then i agree with your thoughts it is harming in some way but still traditional conservative policy is not the answer.Children should be taught cultural values by their parents by indulging them in family gatherings, letting their young buds be close to their grandparents in their teenage years(a lot of parents leave them to rot and die when they do not need them anymore to pay their bills). No one forgets their culture if they are groomed properly or atleast this is the better way of ensuring that their wards will not forget their culture.

What you are saying maybe a step to slow down the poisoning rate but we need a broader thinking to kill the demon.

  6. @uT: Nice points.

@Anushka: I think you probably misunderstood what I actually meant.
See as for the late hours thing I mentioned, if you think children will watch those programs at late nights too then maybe you forgot the parents factor. That is what parents are for, they have to take the responsibility of thier kids; afterall isn't this in Indian culture?
Secondly adults will not watch CID n stuff all the time, let them give some freedom too.

I liked the internet point Utkarsh mentioned. If it has to be that conservative and overprotective then probably you should ban the Internet too for the young teenagers.

@Indian Culture: I think it's more than (dynamic and gay_becoming_legalised_thing..lol).

@Daughter: I would like my daughter to be a tennis-anyone type rather than a bespectacled mouse with a boho lifestyle; if only I happen to have one. *wicked smile*!

@foreign channels: People please don't loathe them just like that, they don't just show sex, they actually have a colossal genre.

To conclude: I have reverence towards the author's views but don't show that much disdain to my views (after all this is a topic for discussion) , try to understand them and not just quibble around, we need a renaissance in our culture otherwise you'll never see India as a developed country.
And I still remonstrate on the point that foreign channels should be banned in India. It's not just about preserving our culture , it's about knowing the world too.

So please rivet on this people, and B1 ppl more comments required, It's good that we are having some kind of healthy discussion rather than gossiping around so thumbs up to you anushka for this. :)

    Two quotes to end with:-

"Preservation of ones own culture does not require contempt or disrespect for other cultures".

"A culture is made or destroyed by articulate voices" *grin*

  7. Hey firstly i would really like to appreciate your comments coz that enable us to get to the roots of the topic.
ya regarding the telecasting of adult stuffs ,i do believe that its absolutely fine if they are posted at late hrs, obviously parents are there to check....this point i had mentioned in my earlier post also.

Regarding that internet point,i would like to point something...Look children don't know what is to be explored, they will never even think of searching the adult stuffs @ internet until and unless they get something in their minds to turn curious.(while shuffling channels they sometimes come across a different world **,beyond their imagination)

The curiosity is generated only when you know a little about something and want to know more about it.

I dont think that a ten year boy would ever explore "whats controversy behind the kissing scenes" if he know only the pure meaning of it(where her mother use to kiss him whenever she feels like). There are heaps examples which comes to our mind regarding this.

Everything should come to us with time.Exposing children to weternization/open relationships at an early age may hinder their proper mental development, and the their innocence would be lost.

We all want our next generation to adopt that "cool" and "trendy" outlook(not only your daughter is in that queue) but let them atleast grow up enough to know whats cool and whats unacceptable and whats moral.Dont snatch their childhood days from them. The aduld controversies ,the.........loads which i need not to mention should be kept away from them.

N ya I do agree that we shouldn't disrespect any culture but just not pay so much heed that our culture be lost in the fog of other cultures.

"Culture is to know the best that has been said and thought in the world"

“Culture is the process by which a person becomes all that they were created capable of being.Live your age and each stage to the fullest”

N ya @ ut ...we all love friends:)

thanks to all for your interest ,keep writing:)

    freedom of speech rocks!!!

  8. hmmmmm nice start to possibly a new career hahahhahaahha....
hmmm the writeup is nice ..... has a good flow to it .... use of words is also worth a mention .....
"Thoughts always are the colours that complete the painting of a person" It seems u have got really frustrated with the topic and poured it all out ... U have a nice approach to writing which is really essential to make a story interesting .... hmmm actually m a little out of thoughts and words for the moment.. i do promise to extend upon this comment of mine

and regarding the word for growing try blooming or blossoming

  10. thats a good issue and i want to share some of the media's explanations on you issue. I had been an audience in this disccusion of which eminent media people were a part. Most editors of newspapers that have running for a long time like HIndu and statesman beleived in your ideology but the younger ones had a different say. They believe that they can air anything whatever sells and is under the media's freedom. the only mechanism of filtering is the feedback. they state you stop wathing or reading it, TRP would go down and they shall stop airing it. so it comes down to the viewers waht they want to see....as very well stated by Utkarsh i also believe in the same process....the values come from within and restrict the effect of outside inputs...
